Cherish Women (Saturday Abortion Clinic Prayer)

OLOP|YA will be at the local Planned Parenthood Abortion Clinic this Saturday from 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. The directions and details are here.

We'll be using our Cherish Women "billboard campaign".

If you haven't come to pray with us at Planned Parenthood before, come pray with us now. It is a peaceful and prayerful time, which takes place on the front lines of the culture of death.

It is our responsibility and our duty to stand for life in this culture of death, and to spread the joy, peace, and contentment there is in upholding the dignity of the human person; women and the unborn, most especially.

These signs were designed by the young adults of OLOP|YA to not only reach the hearts of those women and mothers entering the mill, but also to witness to those driving and walking, during our two hour presence each third Saturday of the month.

Famous National Pro Life Physician to Come to OLOP|YA

OLOP|YA is proud and excited to announce that we will be hosting one of our nation's most prominent pro life physicians, Dr. Mary Davenport, on Saturday, April 24th at 7:00 p.m.

Dr. Davenport will be presenting on the topic of: "Aborting the World: Unmasking the Global Abortion Agenda of Abortion Advocates."

Dr. Davenport is a convert to Catholicism and entered the Church in 2003. She is an obstetrician gynecologist, and initially entered the field motivated by the belief that contraception and abortion were vital to women's health.

Gradually discovering the truths of Humanae Vitae in her personal and professional life, she stopped providing abortions in 1984 and artificial contraception in 1998. Currently she is on the boards of the California Association of Natural Family Planning and the American Association of ProLife Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Dr. Davenport is at the forefront of the pro life movement within the United States, and we are honored to have the opportunity to host her.

OLOP|YA will be gathering on Holy Wednesday Night, March 31st for a private screening of "The Passion of The Christ."

We wil be viewing it in a "Private Theater Room" at the Mansion Grove Apartments. Come as early as 6pm; the movie will start at 7pm and will last until 9:15pm.

Watching "The Passion" can be a powerful way to prepare to enter into the Easter Triduum, and to help make more salient the reality of Our Lord's sacrifice for us.

Enter through the left side door of the Leasing Office at 502 Mansion Park Drive, Santa Clara, CA 95054. Parking may be limited but you can easily park at the Rivermark Shopping Center parking lot (off of Moreland Way) and walk to Mansion Grove.

The fight has been lost; the battle continues.

On the heels of the announcement that Stupak has decided to endorse a Healthcare Bill which, in many ways, degrades and demeans the dignity of the human person and the sanctity of life, due to an alleged "promise" by pro abortion President Obama, the pro-life community finds itself with a sense of false hope and a reality of true disappointment.

The facts are many, but they are clear. To understand the effects that this piece of legislation will have for our Country, is essential. Take a few minutes to do so.

To state things clearly: though the battle is not yet over, in this fight, we have lost. The casualties will be countless.

In a nutshell, the outcome can be surmised from one quote, released early this morning, by America's largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, delivered by their President (who was pleased with the outcome) : "The healthcare passage will significantly increase access to [abortions]. The Executive Order is simply a symbolic gesture."

A symbolic gesture. And, one which may be disregarded by President Obama, himself, at any time. As he is the most pro abortion president in the history of the United States, I would think it irrational to believe he will uphold an order which will defend the rights of the unborn, most especially after he has pledged and proved his support to Planned Parenthood unfailingly.

However, we must still understand the consequences of this legislation. To neglect to do so, would be a serious fault.

First, the "good" of the Healthcare outcome. It, unfortunately, does not outweigh the evil:

The final bill is not the outrageously anti-life bill originally concocted by the Democrat leadership (though it is still significantly detrimental to the pro life cause).

The final bill did not pass last July as the Democrat leadership had originally hoped it would.

By placing the onus on President Obama to sign an executive order which may mollify the abortion funding problems in this legislation, he will have the opportunity to demonstrate to those who remain unconvinced (as most of us do) in his habitual tendency to betray pro-life interests and the promises he has made to them.

The health care battle has made clear the sharp divide between Catholics when it comes to the prudent application of the Church’s social teaching on the most important issues of our day. These groups, leaders and pockets of dissent are now out in the open. They have played their hand. We know where their fox holes lie.

Now, the bad:

The Democrat leadership, on the whole, harassed their own caucus to get their way. This bill is not good for Americans, will not achieve what it claims to do, and will, both in the short and long run, hurt the quality of health care in America, and gravely endanger the vulnerable unborn.

Stupak betrayed the pro life cause. His final vote constituted 100% of his “value” to the pro-life cause on this issue. And that vote was 100% for a bill he claimed for weeks was written in a way he could not support without violating his pro-life principles. Even if the Executive Order were to accomplish what he claims it will accomplish (which is doubtful and is yet to be seen), it does not exonerate him from the choice he made to vote this bill into law.
"Liberal" and heterodox Catholics and isolated leaders of liberal religious women’s orders betrayed the bishops of the United States and smashed the possibility of a unified Catholic witness to the world on this paramount issue. Just like these organizations, leaders and their “brand” of Catholic thinking delivered to President Obama a majority of Catholic voters in this country during the presidential election, they helped him deliver – perhaps to a higher degree than any other group – the President’s “signature” legislation. If Catholics are to positively shape the world according to Catholic principles as revealed by Christ and his Church, we must set our own house in order first.

The strong possibility of an authentic pro-life coalition emerging in the Democrat party suffered a serious, if not insurmountable setback. This pro-life coalition has destroyed its credibility as any threat to the Democrat leadership’s agenda. When the chips were down, Pelosi and her friends browbeat the pro-life Democrats into submission. Read the full article here.

For those who still believe the "Executive Order" will provide significant protection for the unborn, these facts are impossible to ignore.

The question is: does President Obama’s executive order, which obtained the votes of the Stupak coalition, change anything about the outcome? Unfortunately, it changes very little, and will have no ultimate effect.

The pro-life movement had and has several specific concerns about this health reform Act, irrespective of the Executive Order's efficacy.

First, the Act funds abortion-covering insurance, it therefore makes abortion insurance available to thousands of women who don’t now have abortions due to lack of insurance, and it changes 32 states from ones that have laws against administering abortion insurance and turns them all into states that do administer abortion insurance.

Second, the Act fails to restrict $11 Billion in funding to “community health centers” from going for abortion.

Third, the Act vastly expands government power and funding without including a corresponding limit to stop that power and funding from making and facilitating conscience violations against pro-life health providers.

Fourth, the Act allows HHS to define abortion into various elements of health care, like “ambulatory patient services,” “prescription drugs,” and “preventive” services.

On the first point of funding abortion insurance and initially forcing states to assist, the Executive Order changes nothing at all. By its terms, it repeats exactly the abortion-insurance funding scheme in the Act. There’s simply no change.

In summary then, President Obama’s executive order changes almost nothing to alleviate pro-life concerns over this Act. It fully allows federal funding for abortion insurance, it cannot change the fact that CHC funds will be used for abortion, it follows HHS policy against conscience rights by utterly failing to do anything on the issue, and it does not change any of HHS’s ability under the Act to define abortion as health care.

Any pro-lifer concerned about the Act would, objectively, have the same concerns against the Act with or without this executive order." Read the full article here.

It's time to pray for our country, and make reparation for the lives that will be taken. It's also time to make our voices heard, and to stand for the voiceless.

Do not be silent. The cost of silence is already millions of lives.

We'll be celebrating the Solemnity of St. Joseph, and we'd love to have you join us!

Every Friday night during Lent, OLOP|YA will be meeting at 7:15 p.m. in Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.

We'll sit in the last two pews of the church on the left side (if you are facing the altar.) A priest from Our Lady of Peace will lead us in the Stations of the Cross. We'll have booklets for everyone, with all the responses.

If you haven't made the Stations of the Cross before, or if you do it every year, come and join us in building up the young adult community within this culture of death by being part of the Culture of Life. There's no better way to start, then by remembering Christ and His Passion.

Pro Life Logic

The team from Live Action took to the streets of San Jose in July to exercise a bit of pro life logic at a local music festival. What they found (and what most of us have experienced) is that most people have never really thought through their stance on abortion. What an opportunity we (could) have to witness to the culture of life and the dignity of the human person (if only we took it).

With a few guiding principles, the Live Action team reasoned their way through the pro abortion distortion:

1. It is wrong to take the life of an innocent human being.

2. Abortion takes the life of an innocent human being. (Which is scientific fact, not opinion).

therefore ...

Abortion is wrong.

Watch this 2 minute interview to see how using these simple steps can actually illuminate the truth to a receptive heart. At the end of this conversation, one more person was converted to the pro-life cause.

Every person is an opportunity to evangelize. Certainly some are more receptive than others, but in times like these, we have to do our best to convert the hearts of those who are

Sunday, January 24th at 6:30 p.m. the Sisters of Life (from New York) will share with us the meaning of their charism: "To protect and enhance the dignity of human life."

Join us in listening to them talk about the dignity of human life, share how they spend their days ministering to pregnant women, and hear the stories of the graces they have received through the women they have served, as Religious Sisters on the front lines of the Pro-Life cause.

On Saturday, August 29th the first ever pro-life boot camp will take place in the Bay Area. OLOP|YA will be in attendance, and if you would like to join us, we would be more than happy to carpool.

The speakers include Oakland's Bishop, Salvatore Cordileone, Rev. Walter Hoye (Evangelical Pastor jailed for offering to help pregnant women) , and Delores Meehan (co-founder of the Walk for Life West Coast).

It will take place at the Cathedral of Christ the Light. The doors to the Parish Hall will open at 8:00 a.m. , with a continental breakfast. The conference will begin at 9:00 a.m. It will include:

Giant Webcast Thursday to Educate and Mobilize Pro-Life Americans
Against Great Dangers of Obama Health Care Bill

Coalition of leaders alarmed that pro-lifers unaware of what is at
stake with "Obamacare"

A coalition of prominent pro-life leaders has arranged a giant, Stop
The Abortion Mandate live webcast for the public this coming Thursday,
July 23, to alert Americans about the great dangers of the Democrat-
proposed health care bill.

David Bereit, a coalition member and leader of 40 Days for Life, told
LifeSiteNews that he is temporarily de-emphasizing his current 40 Days
for Life tasks to concentrate on this issue because of its extreme
importance. He is concerned that pro-lifers are not aware of what is
at stake with the health care bill.

Connie Marshner, a well-known Washington pro-life political organizer,
warned today that "this is the biggest issue since Roe v Wade. This is
not just about funding. Everyone will be forced to have abortion
coverage." Further, she warned, the effect of successful passage of
the Health Care bill will dramatically change the pro-life movement as
we know it "because every doctor and health care worker will be forced
to be involved in abortion."

The pro-life webcast's promotional material states that "Powerful
abortion industry lobbyists and Washington, D.C. bureaucrats have just
launched a massive effort to mandate taxpayer-funded abortions as part
of their proposed trillion-dollar healthcare takeover."

They list four main results of what they call "this abortion industry
power-grab":

Impose one of the cornerstones of the "Freedom of Choice Act" (FOCA)
by stealth
Force taxpayers to fund a huge abortion industry bailout -- something
the majority of Americans oppose, and certainly cannot afford in these
tough economic times

Mandate that virtually every American be forced into a health plan
that includes abortion coverage
Require honorable medical providers to violate their consciences and
perform abortions -- or risk losing their jobs

The one-time-only LIVE webcast event will take place this Thursday,
July 23, at 9 PM Eastern (6 PM Pacific, 7 PM Mountain, 8 PM Central.)

The live webcast, for which there is no charge, will be approximately
70 minutes long and will be accessible even to Internet users with
only a dial-up connection. Participants who register for the event
will be able to listen in on the live audio and submit questions.

As we continue our study on "Freedom to Love: Applying the Basics of the Theology of the Body to Everyday Life, Love, and Relationships.", we continue the installments of the bouillon cubes.

In case you're unaware, those are the "boiled down, dense, concentrated doses" of our study. They are the things that really get at the heart of the theology of the body.

As we've said before, this stuff is beautiful. Let's not presume that it isn't also dense.

So, here are bouillon cubes. Let's pick up where we left off:

the “choices and actions [of men and women] take on all the weight of human existence in the union of the two.” (TB, 376)

That gives a significance to sexuality that most of us aren't familiar with. How can there be such a focus on our embodiment as male and female? In fact, how can our bodies be so important?

“As a being at once body and spirit, man expresses and perceives spiritual realities through physical signs and symbols” (CCC, n. 1146)

In a word, it is through our bodies that we encounter the Divine. That's the reason for the emphasis on our sexuality: on our embodiment as male and female.

Then again, I suppose I should say it's through the Word that we encounter the Divine.

Through the fact that the Word of God became flesh the body entered theology… through the main door” (TB, 89)

And, in case we're left with any doubt as to the importance and significance of our bodies, JP2 makes it as clear as crystal.

This is what we like to call the MOABC. That is, the Mother Of All Bouillon Cubes.

The body, and in fact, it alone, is capable of making visibile what is invisible: the spiritual and divine. It was created to transfer into the visible reality of the world, the mystery hidden since time immemorial in God, and thus to be a sign of it” (TB, 76).

Only through our bodies are we capable of seeing and receiving the mystery of God. In fact, each body is called to be a sign of that mystery. I'd say that calls for emphasis, indeed.

Once again, this bouillon is straight up. Since there's no chaser, there might as well be a little time for it to sink in.

Salt And Light

Tomorrow will be the first time that Salt and Light will meet, to pray outside of an abortion mill. It is important to continually remind ourselves of the purpose of our presence at the Planned Parenthood.

Yes, our purpose is to join in prayer and petition on behalf of the helpless unborn. But, our purpose must also be to join in solidarity and support with the mothers - at the very least, though our prayers.

Our hope, of course, is that their hearts will be changed. And, that will be our prayer, as we watch them enter the clinic. But, it is my hope that all of you who are planning on joining us tomorrow will pray, tonight, for that to be the case.

Here is a reminder of what it's all about.

The Bouillon Cubes

We are currently in the middle of a 12-week study entitled "Freedom to Love: Applying the Basics of the Theology of the Body to Everyday Life, Love, and Relationships."

Christopher West, himself, likes to equate approaching this subject, to taking a drink of water from a fire hose. It's beautiful stuff, but it's also pretty dense.

So, here are the first bouillon cubes, of our study. That is, here are the "boiled down, dense, concentrated doses" that really speak to the heart of the matter.

To start, here's what it's all about:

"The vision that this Holy Father has given us about sex, love, freedom, and human relationships is a revolution for the world.”

We're quickly reminded about the universality of the Theology of the Body. After all, if you have a body, the Theology of the Body applies to you.

"Though it focuses on sexual love, the theology of the body affords 'the rediscovery of the meaning of the whole of existence, the meaning of life” (TB, 168)

And

"The call to communion inscribed in our sexuality is 'the fundamental element of human existence in the world.' (TB, 16) 'the foundation of human life” (EA, n. 46), and hence, “the deepest substratum of human ethics and culture” (TB, 163).

If this is truly the case, we begin to see the practical applications of the Theology of the Body that are necessary, in our daily lives. In fact, it turns out that they're greater than we think.

They're foundational. And, we soon come to see that we best understand it, if we ever hope to accomplish our goal of building a culture of life.

“It is an illusion to think we can build a true culture of human life if we do not… accept and experience sexuality and love and the whole of life according to their true meaning and their close inter-connection” (EV, n. 97)

For:

The “choices and actions [of men and women] take on all the weight of human existence in the union of the two.” (TB, 376)

It is revolutionary, indeed.

But, I think that's enough truth, for the moment. After all, it is straight up. There's no chaser. Let's take some time, and let it settle.

11.08.08 "Show Me Love"

Now that we've figured out what we want and why we want it, we have to figure out how to find it.
